In February 1890, Alexander Herring and his wife, Emma, purchased 298 acres of land adjacent to this cemetery from Charles Metcalfe, Fannie Spence, and James Spears for a price of $2,762. Alexander died on June 28, 1893, and was buried within this stone wall. Emma died June 4, 1911, and was buried at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo.
Fairmount Cemetery records show Emma’s burial in 1911 but do not reflect Alexander’s burial, though his headstone, which once stood here, is presently located at Fairmount Cemetery in Block 38 Lot 5, next to Emma’s.
We are left to believe that after Emma died, the Herring family removed Alexander’s headstone from Ben Ficklin Cemetery and placed it next to Emma’s grave.
In 2026, a replica headstone for Alexander was placed here.
